Arnav Vast
Class of 2015
Purdue

My name is Arnav Vast and I am now a senior at Robbinsville High School. This will be my fourth and final year as a member of the team. Some of the other extracurricular activities I participate in are soccer, Model UN, Technology Student Association, and track and field. FIRST Team 2590 is definitely the most important of all my extracurriculars. I joined this team because I saw our 2011 robot on display at a freshmen school tour and I thought it was awesome. I joined the team expecting to learn how to build a robot, but I have learned so much more.

FIRST has taught me about teamwork, planning, and has gifted me with real world experience. This program has taught me so much about team work; especially due to the fact our team is so diverse. When I play soccer, I play with all kinds of other kids, but on the field, we are all soccer players. In robotics each person is so different, and I have learned to adapt so that I can work well with every person. I think that this is an extremely important skill because I cannot control who I have to work with in the future. It took me a while to realize how important planning is. Every year, our team does a thorough analysis of the game and we select criteria for our robot before we begin prototyping. At the end of the 2013 season, I was thinking of how and why our robot had performed so well that year, and it was then that I realized how important the teams pre-build planning was. This team has gifted me with real world experience, which I value very much. Because our team lets the students do almost all the work, I have learned much about mechanical engineering. I have learned so much from my team, and I find everything I've learned here highly valuable. Because of 2590, I know that I would like to pursue a career in the field of engineering, but I do not know which discipline yet.

Over the last few years, this team has grown to become a big part of me. I do not view this team as an educational experience, for me, this team is a family. By the end of build season, I’ve spent so much time around these guys that I know them all – even the freshmen – inside out. Honestly, I do not think there is any better place to be than working with the team.
